Artist Statement

"Inu-DoJo ~the nights of dogs~"* is the continuing series of photographs
that focus on unleashed dogs in several dog run located in New York City.
This series of 36 images, all photographed in May 2002, is aiming to capture
the expressions of unleashed dogs. When they fight/play with each other
on instinct, they show us unexpected movement and features. We can see
the abstract, unfamiliar beings suddenly show up there.
Eventually dogs are exhausted and stop moving as if the unseen judge told
them to do so. When they lay down on the ground, they are ready to go back
to usual life as pets of human beings. Dogs are living in two different worlds like
going back and forth between night and day.
I kept watching them carefully like watching sort of sports.
The dog run became a field for fighting sports (Dojo, we say).
In other words, this photo series are trying to see the nights of dogs in Dojo.

*Inu means a dog, and Dojo means a training place for martial arts such as karate, jyu-jyutsu, etc. in Japanese.
